Generic Name: Spiritual Experience
Task / Evidence: 3 sources of information:
Direct stimulation of the limbic system causes religious sensations;
individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy report profound spiritual experiences;
indirect stimulation of the temporal lobes will cause the feeling of a spectral presence
Area of Activation: Bilateral limbic system/temporal lobes.
It is important to note, that these areas are not based on imaging studies, which as far as we are aware, have not been carried out thus far.
Therefore it is very difficult to localise this experience, hence the whole temporal lobe has been selected. This may mislead viewers as to the size of the area that this experience requires.
