Interventions: Digital Technologies, Public Libraries & Archives
 THE
        EVENTA half-day Platform
for Creative Innovation bringing together people from the arts, library
sector and digital media business. The Lab aims to stimulate cross-sector
partnerships and collaborations which innovate the use of digital media
in libraries and archives, through experimentation and play, to create
        new routes of access.
 THEME
New ways to access and create social knowledge are being stimulated by
the influx of digital technologies into public libraries and archives.
 Libraries
and archives now serve new consitituencies in addition to their traditional
user base – those who use the paper-based materials (books, newspapers,
magazines etc), visual and sound materials (video tapes, DVDs and Audio
CDs) as well as computer and internet users. Public libraries
offer unique user-centred environments where ordinary citizens are familiar
with accessing and creating knowledge. Emerging technologies offer innovative
and creative ways to aggregate and diffuse social and local knowledge,
widening access and participation in heritage and learning. The kinds
of questions the Lab is designed to address are:
        Creative
Connections: How might creative connections be made between
analogue and digital media to widen participation and access to culture
          and knowledge?Enhancing
Relevance: How can creative uses of digital technologies enhance
the relevance of libraries and archives to unconventional audiences?Provenance
of Knowledge: Who controls the archiving and distribution of
social knowledge and how does that impact on access to it? AIMS
P2P Lab Brighton offers an opportunity to:

         explore
new ideas of using digital mediaimagine
          how to address overlooked audiencesplay
          with possibilities of future technologiesinspire
exploration of knowledge and the creation of cross-overs between digital
          and analogue mediabrainstorm
new forms of social interaction and spaces for learning through innovative
applications of play and digital media. OUTCOMES
The day is intended to inspire the participants to explore creative cross-overs
between disciplines and media, and imagine the new spaces and forms of
social interactions they imply. Specifically we expect the Lab to:

         imagine
some creative uses of current digital media in library and archive settingsinspire
some potential solutions for how to address overlooked audiencesanticipate
future technologies that might come into play in library &
archive settings (and creative uses thereof) STRUCTURE
        P2P
Lab Brighton is transdisciplinary, non-proprietary and public.

 BACKGROUND
Peer2Peer (P2P) is an informal network of people interested
in developing collaborations and practical solutions for partnerships
across the arts, industry and academia. P2P consists of individual artists
and designers and people from academia, industry, public funding agencies,
private foundations and government. P2P was founded and is managed by
Proboscis as part of the SoMa (social matrices) research programme.
 P2P Creative
Lab Brighton is presented by Proboscis and
Lighthouse with the generous support of Arts
