Proboscis is an independent non-profit distributing social & cultural enterprise led by artists which brings artistic practice into new territories and communities. Founded in 1994, Proboscis is supported primarily through earned income (from commissions, fees, sales and donations) as well as from grant funding and occasional sponsorship. From 2004-2012 Proboscis was a Regularly Funded Organization receiving an annual grant from Arts Council England and in 2005 Proboscis became the first artist-led organisation to be given Independent Research Organisation (university equivalent) status by the Research Councils UK / UK Office of Science and Technology.
