Proboscis is an independent non-profit distributing organisation. Our objectives broadly fit within the definition of a Social Enterprise: ‘a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.’
Proboscis is supported through earned income (from fees, sales and donations) as well as from grant funding and sponsorship. In April 2004 Proboscis became a Regularly Funded Organization of Arts Council England and in 2005 Proboscis became the first artist-led organisation to be given Independent Research Organisation (university equivalent) status by the Research Councils UK / UK Office of Science and Technology.
